Walking Tours around the City of Decatur
Did you know that the City of Decatur, GA has created 6 Informative Walking Tours? They range from easy 1 mile to what they call challenging 4 mile. I did the "challenging" 4 mile with my Dad who is in his mid 60's the other day. The temperature was in the upper 80's so it was kind of hot out. It is pretty level walking and we managed it just fine. But, just for fun we stopped for dinner in between at Tesoro the new Mexican restaurant next to Twains at the end of Church St. in Decatur.
We did Tour #3 which they call Sycamore and More. I actually learned something about Decatur, although I've lived here 12 years. The first 2 story house ever built in Decatur was in 1830. It's listed in the National Register of Historic Places. It's callled the High House, an appropriate name if you think about it being a 2 story house. It's on the corner of N. Candler and Sycamore Streets near the Library.
The tour starts at the Bandstand at the Square in Decatur. It takes you past the Presbyterian Church, which is not on the tour, but is interesting anyway. When you go by it, you'll notice 3 concrete posts sticking up out of the ground on the corner of Church and Sycamore Streets. Those were old hitching posts for horses back in the day. It takes you by the Decatur Rec Center on Sycamore. You'll pass the High House which I mentioned above. Then you'll go by the Methodist Chapel on the corner of Sycamore and Commerce Drive. It's built from Stone Mountain granite, and occupies the same property as the original log church, founded in 1826. You'll go down Historic Sycamore Street which was once a stagecoach route, characterized by it's fine houses, some of the largest in Decatur. You'll loop back up and go down Glendale Ave into the Glenwood Estates Neighborhood which was established in 1925. The homes feature large lots and natural landscaping. You'll loop back up and onto Ponce de Leon Ave passing Glenwood Elementary School. The last stop will bring you back to the Old Courthouse on the Square. The Old Courthouse still has the granite walls and great columns of the original structure built in 1898. Currently it is the Welcome Center and home of Dekalb Historical Society.
As I do the other walking tours, I'll post them with my comments. You can get the tours downloaded from Decatur's website DecaturGA.com or from the Decatur Rec Center, Downtown Development Authority Office or local shops like One Step at a Time in Oakhurst.
Check with your local area and see if walking tours are available. It's a fun way to see a city from a different perspective, even your own city. I found a neat website called MapMyWalk.com so you can actually make your own walking tours wherever you are.
Let me know about great walking paths or tours in your area.

Oktoberfest in Helen, GeorgiaOktoberfest (that's not a typo or ignorance, that's how "they" spell it) is going on in Helen, Georgia. It's in the North GA mountains, just an hour and a half north of Atlanta. Helen is a little Alpine Village and they do a German Oktoberfest every year. This year it's from September 11 through November 2. It started out small in the 70's but has grown to be one of the largest parties in the Southeast. It's a fun time, just be prepared for the crowds. There is German music, the polka, the chicken dance, (Who came up with that one anyway?) and of course Beer. If you want to stay in Helen during the festival, try to book your hotel as soon as possible. They do fill up quickly. Take time to enjoy the beautiful scenery while you're there. In a few weeks the leaves will be changing and I'm sure it will be stunning. For more info on it and to get $1 off coupons you can go to http://www.helenchamber.com/oktoberfest.htm Dekalb County GA Plumbing Ordinance- A Must See for Home Buyers and SellersIf you are buying or selling a home in Dekalb County, GA you need to be aware of the following plumbing ordinance. This is now another required step in the Home Buying or Selling process. Effective June 1, 2008, sellers are required to disclose the Dekalb County Ordinance when selling their homes. Listing agents in Dekalb should add a notice of this ordinance to the seller's disclosure and/or sales contract. Before the new homeowner can obtain water service, they must provide written proof from a home inspector, licensed plumber, or a Department of Watershed Inspector. This certificate will be required with their application for water service. Single family homes and condos must meet the following: Based on average home sales statistics, Dekalb County expects to save 360,000 gallons of water per day by enacting this ordinance and predicts it will take more than 33 years to replace all of the older water guzzling toilets and fixtures. There are some exemptions to this ordinance which include the following: DeKalb County has also enacted a rebate program. There are 2 rebates available: $100.00 rebate for the replacement with High Efficiency toilets (HET's) that use 1.28 gallons or less per flush and $50.00 for "low-flow" (1.6 gallons per flush). You have 60 days from the date of purchase to apply for the rebate. Three rebates maximum per household. Here is the list of qualifying toilets http://www.epa.gov/watersense/pp/find_het.htm For more details and to download the application, go to http://www.dekalbwatershed.com/PDF/ToiletRebateProgramGuidelines.pdf Sellers will have to disclose the Ordinance as part of the disclosure and/or sales contract. The Georgia Association of Realtors has prepared such a Disclosure. Please note that the Ordinance applies to houses and condos in unincorporated DeKalb County. The Georgia Association of Realtors advises: "If the property is located within a city in DeKalb County, such as Decatur, Chamblee or Lithonia, the ordinance does not apply. If Dunwoody becomes a city later on this year, the ordinance will not apply. However, until that occurs, Dunwoody will remain in unincorporated DeKalb County and as such be subject to the ordinance." So, if you are a Seller, you have a huge advantage if you install water saving toilets PLUS you will be able to take advantage of the Rebate. The budget is limited, so the Rebates are only available for a limited time! PLUS, more importantly: Since a Buyer won't be able to receive Water service on the day of closing until he can provide proof that all fixtures are compliant, he/she may even discount the offer or pass on your home after all!
